Introduction

Some years ago, I sat across from a friend who had once been enslaved by heroin addiction. She told me how she had tried everything to break free, yet every attempt ended in despair. Eventually, she reached a point of utter hopelessness – believing she was beyond rescue. That sense of defeat drew her even deeper into the spiral of addiction, as she surrendered what little control remained.

But hopelessness, she later discovered, was a lie. Through the ministry of Teen Challenge, the chains that once bound her were shattered. She found freedom, redemption, and a renewed sense of purpose. Today, she stands as a minister of the Gospel, sharing with others the same hope that once rescued her.

Yet hopelessness is not confined to addiction. It is a shadow that can touch any life. It can make every situation worse. It can cause those struggling financially to lose motivation and waste what little they have. It can drive those in troubled relationships to act selfishly or unfaithfully. It can cause the sick to give up on life and lead those struggling with anxiety and depression into suicide. Wherever it takes root, it drains colour from the soul and silences the song of the heart.

Hope, on the other hand, is the very opposite. It gives us strength to persevere even through great suffering. As the Apostle Paul wrote:

We also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit. (Romans 5:3–5)

Hope is a bell that rings out encouragement when all else is silent. It is a light that guides us through the darkest nights of the soul. It is the hand that lifts us from the mire of our own failures, and the voice that speaks peace into the storms that surround us.

It is not a distant fantasy or an abstract idea. Hope has a name and that name is Jesus.

He is “the hope of the world” (John 8:12), not just for the religious few, but for every person, in every situation, even in the face of death itself.
For He is “the way, the truth, and the life” (John 14:6)—the doorway that leads us from despair into life everlasting.

My prayer is that this book might become more than a reflection on songs – that it might be a key unlocking a door to hope when all seems lost.

God, if You are real, and if You love me, please help me see You.
Show me truth, and give me the courage to follow where it leads.
Open my heart to understand who Jesus is, and guide me toward the life You want for me. Amen.

1. Colours

Because of You, love falls like rain–
A deluge on a dry and thirsty heart.
Because of You, trust leads the way–
Through the darkest night into the light of day.
You are the sun reflecting on a clear blue sea.
You are the morning song to greet a springtime day.

You are so beautiful, there are no words–
Far greater than a crown of pearls.
Amazing are the colours of Your love.
You are the Artist of the universe,
Painting pictures across the earth.
Amazing are the colours of Your love.

Because of You, peace whispers hope–
A still, small voice that speaks deep in the soul.
Because of You, joy lights the dark–
A rainbow shining bright across the sky.
You are the Author of a promise still to come.
You are the Singer of a song yet to be sung.

The inspiration behind these words came while walking my dog Carlos along the cinder track in the coastal village of Robin Hood’s Bay.
As I walked… God began to speak – not in words, but in colour. Colours that would connect me, inspire me and stir my imagination to write a song; where each line became a revelation of the nature of Christ.

“Love falls like rain”
Along the path rain began to fall. With no shelter in sight, we were about to be soaked.
In that moment a typical April shower revealed something to me.
When we step out from the shelter of ourselves, we discover His love doesn’t fall like a drizzle or gentle mist – it falls like a downpour. A deluge sent from heaven to a parched and broken world. In the silence of suffering and in the wastelands of wounded hearts, His love descends, soaking everything it touches.
It doesn’t just fall on us – it falls into us. It runs through our fractures, filling our emptiness and bringing life to the dry soil of our hearts.

“Trust leads the way”
As dark clouds gathered above, dimming the sky and washing the world in greys, ahead was bright sunlight, it lit the path making the budding leaves on the trees shine with radiant colour.
It reminded me that we no longer need to wander, groping for meaning in the dark. We needn’t stumble, unsure of the path.
His truth is not grey with doubt, but radiant with clarity. When we follow Him, even the night reflects the promise of dawn.
His presence leads us through the shadow of death. We may not understand every step, but we can trust the One who walks with us.

“The sun reflecting on a clear blue sea”
On that crisp spring morning, I looked out across the mirror like sea, with the sun reflecting on the vast ocean it lit up the entire Bay.
This light on a sea of glass—this morning song—breaks silence with hope. Christ, the Son of Righteousness, the source of all brilliance, is not a distant deity demanding appeasement, but the radiant image of the invisible God. Like sunlight on still water, He reflects through us, fresh every morning His grace and mercy.

“You are so beautiful”
Looking across where the North Yorkshire Moors meets the sea – what can I say? How can one stand at the edge of such beauty and explain it?
How do you describe waves rolling endlessly to shore with justice?
There are moments when words fail – not because truth is unclear but because it is too vast, too deep and too radiant to contain.
There is a beauty beyond description, not merely in appearance but in presence. A beauty that breathes life, restores hope and lights the darkest corners of the soul.

He had no beauty or majesty to attract us to Him, nothing in His appearance that we should desire Him. (Isaiah 53:2)

Yet through His love, His sacrifice, His grace; He is the most beautiful of all.
His beauty lies in humility, in the kindness of His touch and the mercy in His gaze.
The cross, in all its horror, becomes beautiful because of what it accomplished.
His resurrection is the sunrise of all beauty. Language fails us, we are in awe… speechless.

“Far greater than a crown of pearls”
Pearls are costly treasures formed through pain and time. Crowns symbolise glory and dominion, yet even the rarest jewel or finest crown is only a shadow of Christ’s glory.
His kingship is not adorned with gems, but with wounds that heal the world.

“The Artist of the universe”
With every sunrise, He paints mercy. He draws on the canvas of our hearts.
He scatters colour across the skies, the land, our lives – not randomly, but with purpose.
He not only formed the universe with His words but continues to shape our hearts with His Spirit.
He is the Creator of nature, the Re-creator of our lives. We are His canvas.
Our testimonies are His brushstrokes and He paints pink blossoms on fresh green grass.
He paints every mountain, each sunrise, and every sunset with infinite imagination and holy hands.
He brushed life onto dust and called it “good.” His creation bears His signature in every petal, every wave and the whole panoply of the heavens.

“The colours of Your love”
This love is not monochrome, it is not bland. Christ’s love has depth, dimension, and vibrancy. It reaches every shade of human experience – joy and sorrow, doubt and faith, silence and song.
It surrounds, sustains, challenges and restores. Each moment reveals another hue: grace, patience, power, justice, tenderness.

His love is not beige.

It is not bland.

It is wild with colour, unexpected and glorious.

“Peace whispers hope”
Sometimes we think God’s voice must be loud, like thunder from the heavens or a dramatic cinematic moment.
His love is blue, like still waters beside which He leads us.
He whispers peace into the chaos around us. For me, it often feels like the moments I most need to hear God are the ones where He seems silent.
In the noise of anxiety and worry, His whisper still comes from within: “I am with you.”

“Joy lights the dark”
Looking back along the path Carlos and I had walked, a rainbow appeared.
Full of colour, full of promise – like the goodness and mercy of God, it follows us.
Sometimes, we only see it when we look back. Our joy is not shallow or forced, but like a rainbow— born of both rain and sun—arching across the sky. It turns sorrow into dancing, grief into gladness.

“Author of a promise still to come”
Christ is both Author and Composer, writing our future with purpose and singing over us with hope. British weather is notorious for all four seasons in a single day. That morning walk had them all in one hour.
Like the weather, our lives carry sorrow, pain, and waiting—but the story isn’t over.
His promises—of peace, of justice, of eternal life are not forgotten; they are unfolding.

“Singer of a song to be sung”
There is joy not yet revealed.

Glory not yet seen.

A song of praise still unwritten and a melody forming even in the silence.

Just as winter points to spring, the Author of creation points toward the fulfilment of hope yet to come.

God of Colour
All religions are black and white.
They begin with do – steps to climb, laws to follow, rituals to perform.
Religion is built on the weight of human effort, Ziggurats stretching skyward to a god who stays distant unless you prove yourself worthy.
With Christ, it’s not about what we do,
it’s about what He has done…
and He invites us into a relationship full of colour.

Prayer
You are the Artist of the universe, painting mercy, beauty, and hope across the canvas of our lives. Your love falls like rain upon our parched hearts, filling every fracture, renewing every sorrow, and bringing life where there was emptiness. In the quiet moments, in the whispers of wind and the reflection of sunlight on the sea, You reveal Your presence – peace that steadies us, joy that lights the dark, and hope that points to promises still to come.
Lord, may our hearts learn to trust You fully, to receive the vibrant colours of Your love, and to see Your hand at work even in the storms. Let us respond to Your grace today, saying, “Here I am, Lord. Fill me with Your colours, Your hope, and Your life.”

He stills the Storms all around me
And calms the ever-raging sea

There through the doubts and all my fears

when the hurricanes fill my mind
and my body starts to sink beneath the waves

By the troubles of this world
Oh peace, come and dance with me

When I watch Strictly Come Dancing, I’m always struck by how someone with little or no dance experience can be transformed in just a few weeks. A clunky rugby player, a stiff politician – suddenly they glide across the ballroom as if they’ve danced their whole lives. Their transformation comes through trust: trusting their partner, trusting the steps, trusting the process.

Finding peace in the chaos of life is often much the same. When we learn to follow the steps set before us—steps of trust, surrender, and faith— to be led onto a ballroom of grace, where we can move with unexpected ease even through the fiercest storms.

In Scripture, one of God’s names is Jehovah Shalom, meaning “The Lord is Peace” (Judges 6:24). God had seen the suffering of the Israelites under Egyptian slavery and led them out through Moses, guiding them across a harsh wilderness toward a land of their own, “a land flowing with milk and honey” (Exodus 3:8). It was meant to be a place free from the torment of their past, a land where they could finally breathe.

Yet in time, many turned away from the God who had brought them there. Instead, they embraced the customs of the nations around them – nations that were anything but friendly. These neighbouring peoples raided Israel’s fields, stole their harvests, and brought violence and fear. Peace vanished, replaced by a constant threat hanging like dark clouds over the land.

Into this unrest stepped Gideon. While hiding from the Midianites, he encountered the messenger of God and feared he would die because of the encounter (Judges 6:22), but the Lord spoke words that cut through his terror: “Peace be with you. Do not fear; you will not die” (Judges 6:23).

Those words steadied Gideon’s heart and, through him, brought hope to Israel. In response, he built an altar and named it Jehovah Shalom, a lasting reminder that even in oppression and chaos, peace can be restored when God’s voice is trusted above the noise.

Peace
Peace isn’t found on a beach with a cocktail in Spain or beside a quiet lake with a fishing rod. Those are moments of rest, but not necessarily peace. True peace is not static and not tied to geography. True peace is found in the centre of the storm, in the quiet eye where everything else rages around us. Storms will come. It’s never a matter of if, but when. None of us are immune to this world’s troubles.

When our strength isn’t enough—and it often isn’t—we step onto the ballroom of God’s grace. We come into close position, draw near to the Lord of the dance, and trust His lead.

The apostle Paul puts it beautifully:
Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything; tell God your needs, and don’t forget to thank Him for His answers. If you do this, you will experience God’s peace, which is far more wonderful than the human mind can understand. His peace will keep your thoughts and your hearts quiet and at rest as you trust in Christ Jesus.
(Philippians 4:6–7)
When we follow His steps, we find peace—steady, surprising, and strong enough to carry us through any storm.

Prayer
Lord of Peace,
Thank You for being Jehovah Shalom – the One who brings calm into the chaos of our lives. Teach me to trust Your leading, to follow Your steps even when the storm rages around me. Lead me onto the ballroom of Your grace, where Your presence steadies my trembling heart. Fill me with the peace that surpasses all understanding and help me rest in the assurance that You are with me, guiding every step.
Amen.

3. The beauty of Your love

In the spring of 2024, I was walking a stretch of the Cleveland Way between Robin Hood’s Bay and Whitby. It was one of those rare and radiant days that seem to lift the very soul – when the air is crisp with promise, the earth smells freshly awakened, and simply being alive feels like a gift newly unwrapped. The cliffs are to my left and the endless swell of the North Sea are to my right. I felt a stirring inside me – an urge to capture what I was seeing and hearing. So, I pulled out my phone and began to speak aloud, naming the beauty in front of me as quickly as it appeared. I didn’t try to shape poetry or compose lines; I simply testified to the moment.

Later, when I got back home and listened to it again, I realised those spoken words carried something special. There were a simplicity and honesty to them. I felt inspired that I shaped them into a song, pretty much word for word, just as I saw it.

Everywhere I look
All I see is blue sky,
And the sun burning down,
Glistening on a clear northern sea.
The sparrows sing their song
To say hello to springtime,
And the leaves start to cheer
As wind blows through the old oak tree.
And everywhere I go
I see the footsteps of creation.
And everywhere I go
I see the beauty of Your love.
Everywhere I look
All I see is heaven.
As the clouds melt away
I can feel the warmth of the breeze.
Hear the pounding of the sea
As it breaks up the shoreline,
The lambs hear the call
And run into their mother’s arms.

Those words from that spring walk stuck with me. When the dark winter mornings arrive (as they do)—you know, the ones where you open the curtains and wonder why it’s still pitch black— remembering those words takes me straight back to that spring day. Just thinking about it warms me up.

In Genesis 8:28, it says,
“While the earth remains, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night, shall not cease”

This verse sits within God’s covenant with Noah, a divine promise that the world would never again be washed clean by destruction. The rainbow, the turning of the seasons, the dependable rhythm of cold and heat, sunrise and dusk are not merely cycles of nature, but testimonies of God’s faithfulness. They whisper that creation is upheld by loving hands, preserved under a grace that renews itself again and again.

The footprints of creation I sensed on the cliffside—and the beauty of God’s love woven through sparrows’ songs and dancing leaves—are not confined to spring. They pulse through every season. Each one carries its own purpose, its own textures of joy and sorrow, work and rest, sowing and gathering. Ecclesiastes 3 reminds us of these sacred contrasts: a time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to plant and a time to pluck up what is planted. Fourteen pairs of seasons, each one appointed, none wasted.

God is with us in every season of our lives.
If, in winter, He leads a hedgehog to hibernate or geese to migrate how much more does He prepare us for seasons we go through.

However, understanding the season we are in can steady the soul. We prepare differently for winter than for summer. We dress differently, plan differently, hope differently. In winter we reach for a thick coat; in summer we may not even need a cagoule. In spring we plant what we hope to enjoy in autumn; in autumn we gather what spring once dared to promise.

What season are you in?
Is it springtime, a season for nurturing your children, planting values deep into their hearts?

Is it summer, a time of fruitfulness, of work, of energy rising?

Is it autumn, when cherished moments with loved ones glow warm like golden leaves?

Is it winter, a time of endurance, contemplation, or grief?

Wherever you are—walking sunlit cliffs in spring, toiling in soil under a summer sun, sitting by a winter fire, or stumbling through a storm of loss— God is with you. His presence does not migrate with the seasons. His love does not hibernate or fade. In the pounding waves, in the silent snows, in the first buds of hope or the final falling leaves, He is there.

And if you look closely –
everywhere you go,
you may just see the footsteps of creation
and the beauty of His love.

Prayer
Lord, You know every season of my life far better than I ever could, and You walk with me through each one. I ask You to show me clearly what season I’m in, whether it’s a time to plant, to grow, to harvest, or to rest. If You’re calling me to begin something new, help me step forward in faith; if it’s a time of waiting or slowing down, give me patience and peace. Prepare my heart for whatever You’re shaping in me, giving me wisdom to choose well, courage to keep going when You say “go,” and trust to be still when You say “wait.” Guide me through this season and ready me for the next, so that in every change—every high and low, every beginning and ending—I stay close to You. Amen.

In the darkest moments when day seems far away.
When I was a child, Christmas Eve carried a sense of wonder and anticipation. I remember lying in bed, being so excited about the joy of Christmas morning, the presents, the chocolate, the celebration. Yet, no matter how many times I drifted off, I’d wake again and it was always still night. The darkness seemed endless, as though the morning would never come.

In many ways, our lives can feel like that. Long nights of waiting, moments when hope seems delayed, and darkness lingers longer than we would like. But just before the dawn, there is a light in the sky. It is a star that shines brighter than all the rest, often appearing an hour or so before sunrise. Astrologers call it Venus, but for centuries it has been known as the morning star— It shines when the night is at its deepest as a sign that the night is almost over and a radiant herald of a new day that is about to break.

In Scripture, Jesus is called the Bright Morning Star (Revelation 22:16); and this title carries deep hope. He is not only the promise of a new day but also the one who ensures it will come. In our darkest nights, the morning star is a constant reminder that sorrow, fear, and struggle do not have the final word. His light pierces the darkness, declaring that a new dawn is already breaking.

When the snow is melting
In C. S. Lewis’ book, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe it depicts a clear, simple picture of what it looks like when hope breaks into a dark, frozen world. Under the White Witch, Narnia is stuck in a season where it is “always winter, but never Christmas”—a land where cold, fear, and hopelessness seem permanent. Then the moment Aslan returns, everything begins to change; snow melts, rivers thaw, and signs of life appear. Winter’s power weakens, not because the battle is finished yet, but because the King has come back into the land. His presence alone starts the turning of the tide.

This story connects with the image of Jesus as the ‘Bright Morning Star’. Just as the morning star shines before the sun rises, Aslan’s arrival signals that winter is ending, and a new day is on its way. Even though the cold may still be felt, the thaw has already begun… the long night won’t last. The shadows do not get the final say.
In the same way, when Jesus shines into our lives, the “winter” seasons of sorrow, fear, or waiting start to lose their grip. The darkness is real, but it is not final. His light is the first sign of the coming morning—the promise that hope is already breaking through.

Echoes in the valley.
There are times when our prayers feel like they vanish into the silence of the valley, unheard and unanswered. The words leave our lips, but nothing seems to move, and the heavens feel still. The waiting feels long… In those moments, it’s easy to believe our cries have slipped into emptiness, carried off by the wind and forgotten. But silence is not absence, the quiet places of our lives can still carry the hidden movement of God. Our prayers are never lost; they move like echoes across the mountains, reverberating long after we stop speaking. What feels like emptiness to us is often the space where God is already working, already warming the frozen ground beneath our feet and while we may not see immediate change, every prayer becomes part of the slow thaw: the gentle softening of winter’s grip, the subtle shift in the air, the quiet assurance that the ‘Morning Star’ has risen and the darkness is already losing its strength. Though the valley feels silent, Heaven is not…The Morning Star is already shining over our prayers — even the ones thought lost.

There’s a river flowing.
The vision of this new day is breathtaking: a river flowing deep and wide, crystal-clear waters brimming with life. It is the river of God’s renewal and restoration, refreshing weary hearts.

Even in the quiet of night, you can sense it moving, carrying nourishment and promise. This river is more than just water—it is the living presence of God, reaching into every dry, weary place of our hearts, bringing refreshment and hope where we thought there was none.

The river moves beneath the surface, and the star shines above the horizon—both pointing to the same truth: a brand-new day is coming. Joy will return, hearts will be restored, and the burdens of yesterday will be washed away. When we lift our eyes to the Morning Star and let our hearts drink from the river of God’s presence, we are reminded that hope is not just a dream—it is already flowing, already shining.

Prayer
Lord, help me in the long nights when hope feels distant and the darkness seems endless. When my heart feels frozen and my prayers feel unheard, remind me that light is already breaking. The morning star is shining before the dawn, the slow thaw of winter’s grip, and the river of life flowing beneath the surface. Help me trust that even in silence, change is quietly happening, that sorrow and fear do not have the final word, and that joy and renewal are on their way. Lift my eyes, warm my heart, and give me the courage to keep waiting, knowing a brand-new day is coming. Amen.

5. Hope rings a bell

When horrors fill your mind
And nightmares fill your dreams
Hope will bottle up your tears
And will still the beating heart

When the torment takes control
And the panic raids your thoughts
Hope will cover you with peace
light a candle in the dark

Hope rings the bell
of that glorious day
when the anxious clouds will clear
you will jump for joy
like calves from the stall
Leaping over the gates of fear

When the torment takes control.
Perhaps one of the most debilitating phenomena of our modern Western world is anxiety. I remember my mother, gripped by fear over the simplest things. At Christmas, she would worry endlessly whenever we left home, convinced that accidents were lurking around every corner. I tried to reason with her, to bring logic to her fears, but it never worked. Anxiety is not rational—it is a condition of the mind, like a broken leg or arm. Even prayer, meant to bring peace, could sometimes intensify the fear. Praying for protection could spark thoughts of danger, as if acknowledging it would make it real. In these moments, panic takes control, torturing the very soul.

Anxiety is not a prophetic premonition; it is an illness that requires care and compassion. Scripture reminds us that God sees and tends to our anxious hearts. In Isaiah 26:3, we are promised:
“You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you.”

And Psalm 55:22 assures:
“Cast your cares on the Lord and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous be shaken.”

Peace is not the absence of fear but the deep assurance that God is present even when our minds race.

The Bible also gives us a vivid story of hope in the midst of anxiety. King Saul was plagued by fear and torment, as though a dark grip held him captive. Yet whenever the young, skilled harp player David played, Saul experienced relief—his anxiety lifted, his mind was soothed, and his frightened, beating heart was stilled. This story shows us that God can bring calm and healing in gentle, unexpected ways. Sometimes it comes through the care of others, sometimes through music, prayer, or a quiet moment in His presence.

Anxiety is one of the quiet thieves of our modern world. In the UK, nearly 1 in 6 adults experience an anxiety disorder, and around 73% report feeling anxious at least sometimes in the past two weeks, with 20% feeling anxious most or all of the time. Anxiety is not fleeting—it can hijack the mind and weigh heavily on the soul. And yet, hope is stronger.

Light a candle in the dark.
Hope lights a candle in the dark; it bottles up our tears and stills the beating heart. Jeremiah 29:11 reminds us:
“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

One day, the bell of hope will ring, heralding a time when fear and anxiety are gone. While our minds may still tremble with uncertainty, our souls can rest in the knowledge that God’s steadfast love is stronger than our fears.

For now, hope is active. It is found in small steps: reaching out for help, speaking our fears, and grounding ourselves in the truth that anxiety does not define us. Psalm 46:10 calls us:
“Be still and know that I am God.”

Even amidst inner turmoil, God’s presence can calm the storm.
Anxiety may feel like an uninvited storm controlling our thoughts, but hope is the lighthouse guiding us to shore. Compassion—for ourselves and for those around us—is the splint for our wounded minds, and faith is the balm for the anxious soul. One day, the sickness will end. One day, all anxiety will disappear. Until then, let us walk gently, anchored in hope, remembering that while the mind may tremble, the soul can be still.

Prayer
Lord, I cast my cares upon You and ask for Your peace to guard my heart and mind (Psalm 55:22). Strengthen me when fear rises, steady my trembling thoughts, and help me rest in the assurance of Your steadfast love (Isaiah 26:3; Jeremiah 29:11). Teach me to be gentle with myself, to reach for hope in You, and to trust that even in the storms of my mind, my soul can be still. Amen.

6. Carry me home

Looking through my window, I see the evening sky.
As shadows grow longer. the day says goodbye
Though darkness closes in it’s really good to know.
The night is not forever mornings coming soon.

looking at the Ocean. I see a mighty storm.
The wind and waves fury rage war with the shore
Though cliffs begin to fall and sand is washed away
The ancient rock remains firm in these stormy days

I can hear a love song Its playing in your ear
A song of redemption for all that can hear
When the world closes in and my heart starts to fear

I’ve been running up this hill for what seems like an age

In 2023, my wife Jo and I moved to Robin Hood’s Bay so she could assume the post of overseeing six churches in the area. We knew from the outset that it was a beautiful place—but I did not yet realise how deeply its landscape, seasons, and rhythms would stir something creative and spiritual within me. Over time, the Bay became more than a home; it became, a mirror, a gentle voice revealing the heart of God.

One late winter afternoon, I watched from my window as the light faded across the moors. The sky, once bright over the heather, slowly gave way to dusk. A sadness touched me as the day slipped away, because it had been one of those crisp, clear days that feels like a gift in the midst of winter. Yet as the shadows stretched long, a quiet truth whispered to my heart: The night is not forever. Morning is coming.

So often our lives carry these same moments of dusk—where we must say goodbye to dreams that never unfolded, to hopes swallowed by regret, or to relationships we fear we have damaged beyond repair. We look at the darkness we have created or the darkness that has come upon us and wonder if morning will ever return. Yet Scripture tells us,
“Weeping may stay for the night, but rejoicing comes in the morning” (Psalm 30:5).

The heart of Christianity is this promise of morning—the resurrection of Jesus Christ. He is the dawn that breaks every night, the light that no darkness can overcome (John 1:5). Because of Him, every season of sorrow is temporary, and no night— however long—can eclipse His returning light. His mercies are new every morning (Lamentations 3:22–23), and His grace greets us like sunrise.

As we learn to rest in this truth, we find that some of our best prayers are the ones we fall asleep whispering, trusting that God is already preparing the morning.

The Ancient Rocks Remain
Days later, I looked from the same window—but this time toward a brooding North Sea. The clouds thickened, the wind roared through the cracks of the frame, and the waves rose like living creatures, hurling themselves against the cliffs. The sea boiled and surged, pulling at everything it could reach and yet the rocks stood unmoved. Centuries of storms had come and gone, yet they remained—steadfast, strong, enduring.

Life has storms of its own—emotional, spiritual, relational. They come suddenly or slowly; they batter our confidence, threaten our security, and erode our sense of self. Plans crumble like cliffs, and hope can wash away like sand. We feel the pull of the waves and fear that we may be dragged under. But in the midst of this turbulence, we discover a deeper truth: we stand on an unshakable Rock.
“The Lord is my rock, my fortress, and my deliverer” (Psalm 18:2).

Christ is the sure foundation beneath our feet— unchanging, unmovable, eternal. While the world shifts and shakes, His love holds firm. The storms may rage, but the Rock remains.

And so, the promise of morning flows into the promise of foundation: dawn will come, and until it does, we do not stand alone in the dark or in the storm.

I Can Hear a Love Song
At the heart of new mornings and immovable rocks is one central truth: the love of God. Not a sentimental or fragile love, but a love refined through sacrifice and suffering—a love proven on the cross. This love is the steady melody beneath every moment of grace and mercy. It is a love song that plays not in the air but in the soul.
“I have loved you with an everlasting love” (Jeremiah 31:3)

is the refrain that echoes behind every dawn. The same voice that calmed storms speaks over our fear:
“Do not be afraid, for I am with you” (Isaiah 41:10).

This love draws us, shelters us, restores us. It reminds us that even in silence, God is singing over us (Zephaniah 3:17).

When the world closes in, when we feel the storm’s howl inside our own chest, the love of God becomes our sanctuary. It is His presence that steadies us. It is His promise that reassures us. It is His voice that calls us home.

This flowing river of divine love leads us toward one more truth—perhaps the most personal and tender of all.

My Rescue Comes from Heaven
There is a steep hill in Robin Hood’s Bay—the kind you climb halfway before realising the hardest part is still ahead. Life gives us many hills like this. Some of them are physical, but most are the inner ones—the struggles that feel endless, heavy, and exhausting. Our legs shake, our hearts ache, and our strength runs out.

And it is precisely in that moment—when we cannot climb any further—that we encounter the extraordinary grace of God. Our rescue does not come from the strength of our legs but from the strength of His hands.
“My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth” (Psalm 121:2).

“He will carry the lambs in His arms” (Isaiah 40:11).

We are not saved by endurance. We are saved by surrender. Christ is our rescuer, reaching down from heaven to lift us when we have no strength left. He carries us into the place of peace, into the land of promise, into rest we could never reach on our own.

Prayer
Lord Jesus, Light of the world,
thank You that the night is never forever and that Your mercies greet us with every dawn.
Thank You that in every storm You are our Rock—steady, sure, and unshakable.
Tune our hearts to hear Your love song, the gentle voice that calls us back to peace.
And when the hills of life grow steep and our strength fails,carry us with Your rescuing grace.
Lead us into the place of rest, hope, and renewal. Hold us fast until morning breaks.

7. There is hope

Tears are falling, nation mourning

The silent pleas of those in grief
Of those in need with nowhere to turn

A loss so great echo’s through the land

Land of hope and Glory
Defender of the faith

His name is Jesus hope of the world

families mourning, leaders falling,
Sounds of warning, of dark days to come
A distant war, calls to our shore,
The perfect storm, rolls in from the sea

I was driving home from a meeting in September 2022, just days after Queen Elizabeth II had passed away. The nation felt fragile, subdued, almost breathless. As I travelled, a lyric rose quietly in my mind: “Tears are falling, nation mourning, change is calling out into this day.” And as I pondered those words, another phrase settled deeper still— “There is hope.”

Tears Are Falling
It was a time when many still carried the weight of Covid’s aftermath. Instead of celebration, there was deep grief and mourning, loved ones gone too soon, and families facing financial strain. Political scandals clouded the nation, while Russia’s invasion of Ukraine sent tremors across the world. And then the Queen—a steady, familiar presence—was gone. It felt like a nation standing at the edge of uncertainty. Change was coming, whether we wanted it or not.

Yet even in seasons of mourning and upheaval, the Gospel declares a truth stronger than sorrow: grief is never the end of the story. Jesus Himself says,
“Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted” (Matthew 5:4).

In Him, sorrow bends toward hope, and despair gives way to the comfort of God’s unfailing presence. These struggles—whether in 2022 or 2025—are not new. They echo the ancient ache of a fallen world, a story God has never stood far from, a story He entered to redeem.

From Darkness to Dawn
A second after midnight is already the beginning of morning. And just after the coldest point of winter, spring has already begun its quiet work beneath the soil. The same was true at the cross. When Jesus was crucified, darkness covered not only the sky but the hearts of His disciples. Their Teacher, their Messiah, their Friend—their hope—hung brutally on a wooden cross, mocked and torn until His final breath. To them, everything was lost.

Yet that moment of deepest darkness was already the beginning of resurrection. As His blood touched the dust from which humanity was formed, a new creation was being written. In His death, the seed of hope was planted—small, hidden, yet unstoppable. And three days later it burst forth, spreading life across the world. As Jesus declared,
“I am the resurrection and the life” (John 11:25).

A Living Hope, Not a Fading Crown
Our nation may call itself a land of hope and glory, a defender of the faith—but our true hope is not in any country, crown, or leader. Hope has a name, and His name is Jesus. This hope is not wishful thinking or vague comfort. It is the hope of a Saviour who conquered death, a King whose kingdom cannot be shaken.

This King does not rule from a distant throne. He walks across our islands, dwells within the hearts of His people, and shepherds us through every storm. As the psalmist proclaims,
“God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore, we will not fear, though the earth give way” (Psalm 46:1–2).
Even when the world feels unstable, Christ remains our anchor, our shelter, our unshakeable hope.

Not because circumstances are easy,
not because nations are stable,
but because Jesus is alive.

Prayer.
Jesus, I come to You because I want to know You more—truly, deeply, personally. In the places where my heart feels uncertain or unsettled, meet me with Your peace. Where tears still fall and life feels shaken, show me that You are near and that real hope is found in You alone. As I think about the darkness You walked through on the cross and the life that broke forth in Your resurrection, let that same hope rise in me. Draw me closer to Your heart; help me hear Your voice and recognise Your presence in my days. Teach me to trust You, to follow You, and to rest in Your love. I want to know You not just as an idea, but as my Saviour, my Shepherd, and my constant companion. Jesus, lead me deeper into Your truth and Your life, until I can say with all my heart that You are my hope, my strength, and my Lord. Amen.

8. When I see Your face

I see you in the starry skies
All across the universe
In the beauty of creation
In the wonders of the earth

I see you in a baby born
at the time when life begins
In the moment love made promises
And the memories they bring

I see you in the bread and wine
Joined together all as one
In the wonders of your glory
And the things that you have done

But when I look and see the lonely old man
Sleeping in a doorway by the road
Right there in the centre of his loneliness

In the beauty of creation
It was Autumn and I awoke early to prepare for a long drive from Yorkshire to Coventry where I had a meeting. As I opened the curtains the sun was just starting to rise, bringing light across the bay, the sun shimmering over the sea—its light dancing on the waves in a way that took my breath away. In that quiet, golden moment, God’s presence felt undeniable. God was there and I could see the beauty of creation laid out like a tapestry of multi colours before my eyes.

I See You in the Baby Born
As I drove south along the painfully slow M1, my mind drifted to memories of my children. My daughter’s birthday was only days away, and soon I was recalling those sacred moments of holding each of them for the first time, witnessing the miracle of birth up close. Their tiny faces were mirrors reflecting a God who creates not from distance, but from nearness—breath to breath, heart to heart. It was as though heaven shone a light deep into my soul, revealing how greatly I had been blessed. In those ordinary-yet-miraculous days, I saw the hand of God.

But as the miles passed and city edges drew near, beauty was replaced by clutter—broken bottles, torn plastic tangled in brambles. It was as if the world wanted to remind me not only of its wonder, but also its wounds.

Arriving in Coventry just after noon, I walked through the city streets. Near a bus stop lay a man folded into a sleeping bag, face pressed to concrete, weathered by time and solitude. People stepped over him without pause, eager to catch a bus, blind to his reality. I hesitated, unsure what to do, and joined the flow of pedestrians as they hurried by. The contrast struck me: the splendour of creation and the miracle of birth suddenly seemed very distant. And the question rose—Where is God?

When I arrived at the meeting, It felt great reconnecting with old friends I had not seen in ages. Worship was powerful—God’s presence thick, holy, unmistakable.

The next day we gathered in the ruins of the old cathedral, its bombed-out walls open to the sky. Together, we prayed for reconciliation: between nations, neighbours, and the divided chambers of our own hearts. Once again, I knew—God was there, His presence saturating our conversations and filling the fractured space with hope.

When I See His Face
As evening fell and I walked back to my hotel, I passed a shuttered shop where a girl sat cross-legged, crying, mascara streaming down her cheeks. She was staring at her phone; she looked broken and forlorn. I wondered if she was waiting for someone to text back, apologise, or come to her. A little farther on, a boy wandered the street, pupils wide and frightened, lost in the half-promises of chemicals and escape. The question returned—Where is God?

Even before the thought could settle, a quiet answer rose:
Here, exactly here.
Not aloof, not absent, but present in every wound humans inflict and every tear humans shed. That Is when I see His face.

People ask, “If God is real, why is there so much suffering?”
But perhaps the deeper mystery is not God’s absence from suffering—but our blindness to His presence within it.

Loneliness, brokenness, hopelessness—these do not prove that God has turned away. They reveal the fragile places where His compassion meets our humanity. The sunrise over the bay, the miracle of a newborn child, a cathedral filled with prayer, the tears of a girl who feels forgotten—these are not separate worlds but one woven revelation.

The same face that shone over the water at dawn, and blessed the prayers in the ruins of stone, is the face that kneels beside a sleeping bag at noon and weeps with the broken on city streets.

He is the face that shines through darkness, the presence that whispers you are not alone.

The true beauty of creation is not just in the world’s splendour, but in the love that holds us—especially when life breaks.

Faith is not merely seeing God in the grand design,
but recognising Him in the cracked places where humanity bleeds.

Prayer
Father, open our eyes.
Give us eyes to see what You are doing and hearts to recognise Your presence—in beauty and in brokenness, in sunrise and in sorrow, in the faces of the forgotten and the cries of the weary. Teach us to see Your face in every place You dwell: in creation that sings Your glory, in communities gathered in Your name, and in the wounded places where Your compassion shines brightest. Lord Jesus, help us not to walk past what You are doing, but to discern Your work, Your nearness, and Your love wherever we go.
Amen.

9. Look to the Son

There’s no fire on the altar of idols
There’s no hope in the shrines of religion

But There’s a light in the days of darkness.

A Hope Worth Living For
Growing up on a council estate in York, the path ahead for many young people seemed fairly predictable — a job on the railway or in the chocolate factory. Yet deep down, I always believed life must hold something more, something with real purpose and meaning. As a teenager, I threw everything into music. It became my passion, the thing I lived for. But as the years went by, I discovered that even music couldn’t fill the empty space inside me.

When my children were born and I became a father and a partner, I thought I had finally discovered my purpose. I loved my family dearly, yet even then a quiet ache remained within me — a gap I couldn’t describe, like a hole in my very soul.

Before I met Christ, I searched for meaning in all the wrong places, and that search nearly led me to ruin. Then one day my girlfriend at the time — now my wife — went to church. She returned full of excitement, telling me she had seen a vision of Jesus during the service. Curious, I went with her the following Sunday. Expecting nothing more than boredom, I instead found myself wrestling with emotions and thoughts I could not explain.

That inner struggle opened the door to a journey — a journey into a dimension of life I had never known. Over time, I realised that the aching gap within me was slowly being filled. Though life still brings its challenges, I now carry a joy and a peace I once believed were impossible. I found a hope worth living for and it changed my life forever. It wasn’t an encounter with religion or church that changed me — it was an encounter with Jesus.

No Fire on the Altar of Idols
There’s a line in a Bob Dylan song that says, “You’ve got to serve somebody.” It speaks to our inherent need to worship something — whether it’s a football team, a pop star, drugs, alcohol, pornography, our children, or even religious relics and good-luck charms. These things might take our money or distract us from the daily grind, but they cannot satisfy the deep yearning within us. They offer noise, not nourishment. They offer escape, not life.

No Justice in a World Full of Self
True justice can only come from a judge with no self-interest — one who sees the truth as it truly is, not the version we craft for ourselves. True justice isn’t shaped by political agendas, cultural biases, or national borders. In Amos 5:23–24 (MSG),
God says:
“I can’t stand your religious meetings… I’m sick of your fund-raising schemes… Do you know what I want? I want justice — oceans of it. I want fairness — rivers of it.”
Christ, the true Judge, promises that one day the oppressed, the broken, and the wronged will receive justice. In Him, justice isn’t a concept — it’s a promise.

Looking for a Way Out
Some people try to find life in the little kingdoms they build around themselves. Others search for guidance in star signs, spiritualism, or occult practices. Still others hope in political agendas. Yet when storms come, these foundations wash away — like the man who built his house on sand (Matthew 7:24–27).

Real life — true, unshakeable life — is only found in a hope worth living for and a love worth dying for.

Only by looking to the Son, Christ our rock and firm foundation, can we truly stand and truly live.

There’s No Hiding from the Valley of Death
We are mortal, and one day our bodies will return to dust. There is no escaping the grief and pain that death brings; it is a path we all must walk. Yet for those in Christ, there is joy even in mourning, and grace even in seasons of tears. The life He gives is not a comforting idea — it is eternal reality. Christ is the Tree of Life, our hope now and forever. Though we must all pass through the valley of the shadow of death, we need not fear,
“for He is with us; His rod and His staff, they comfort us” (Psalm 23).

In the end, every heart is searching — searching for meaning, for truth, for something solid beneath our feet. In Christ, that longing finds its answer. He offers a hope strong enough to live for and a love powerful enough to die for. He is the fulfilment of every ache and the foundation beneath every storm.

Prayer
You know the deep longings of our hearts — the ache for meaning, the cry for hope, the hunger for a love that will not fail. Open our eyes to see that You alone are the hope worth living for and the love worth dying for. Pull us away from the idols that cannot satisfy and the false foundations that cannot hold. Lead us back to the solid ground of Your truth, Your mercy, and Your everlasting arms. Fill the empty spaces within us with Your presence and awaken in us a desire to follow You with all that we are. May Your hope anchor our lives, and may Your love reshape our hearts. Amen.

Bless the LORD, O my soul
Are you a “glass half full” or a “glass half empty” kind of person? Do you naturally find something positive in every situation, or are you the type who, in moments of discouragement, feels as if the world is collapsing around you? The truth is, we are often both. There are times when faith feels abundant, giving us strength to take on whatever life throws our way. Other times, even the simplest tasks— getting out of bed, facing the day—feel overwhelming.

David, the psalmist, knew this struggle well. He was a man who experienced great victories, yet he also wrestled with despair. In Psalm 103:1, he writes,
“Bless the LORD, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless His holy name.”

Here, David commands his lips to do something that his heart could not yet feel naturally: to give thanks and praise to God. He understood that offering a sacrifice of praise—even in the midst of weakness— could soften the heart, awaken faith, and bring about a supernatural shift in his spirit.

What begins as a simple act of obedience can transform trembling doubt into steadfast courage. Being strong in faith and declaring “Bless the Lord” may not instantly remove pain, disease, or tragedy from our lives.

A loved one may still face illness, or circumstances may seem unchangeable. Yet, in the act of praising God, we find strength to endure, clarity to make wise decisions, and peace to support those around us with compassion. Praise becomes the anchor that steadies our hearts in the storms of life.

Psalm 103:2 reminds us:
“Bless the LORD, my soul, and do not forget all His benefits.”

And 1 Chronicles 16:12 encourages us:
“Remember the wondrous works that He has done, His miracles and the judgments He uttered.”

Remembering God’s faithfulness in the past equips us to face the future with trust. This is not presuming on God but trusting Him—believing that even if tragedy strikes, He can guide, protect, and sustain us through it.

Remember what He has done
I remember one particular time when I felt overwhelmed, standing at a crossroads in life. The pressure of uncertainty weighed on me so heavily that sleep seemed impossible, and anxiety filled my mind. In that quiet, I chose to withdraw into prayer and reflection, saying quietly, “Whatever happens, Lord, I trust You.” Almost immediately, a sense of peace and clarity settled over me. What felt like an impossible situation began to shift, and I found the wisdom and courage to move forward.

Years later, when faced with a similar challenge, I recalled that earlier experience. Remembering God’s faithfulness and provision strengthened my conviction that He is trustworthy. My faith, once fragile, grew resilient. The psalmist speaks to this exact truth:
“Why, my soul, are you downcast? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise Him, my Saviour and my God” (Psalm 42:5).

Remembering His guidance, His miracles, and His steadfast love equips us to face the storms of today. Even when our faith feels small, even when the
night is long, we can lift our eyes, breathe deeply, and sing. Not just any song, but a song of remembrance, gratitude, and courage—proof that God’s mercy never fails, and His love endures forever.

Prayer
Lord, help me remember Your faithfulness when my heart is heavy and my path unclear. Bring to mind the times You have guided me, provided for me, and brought peace in the midst of fear. Strengthen my faith so that I may face today’s challenges with courage and trust in Your love. Let my soul rise in song, even in sorrow, and may my life be a witness to Your unending goodness and mercy. Amen.

11. Today

Today another young life was lost
Taken by surprise no reason why
Nothing to say can ease the pain
How can words explain the sorrow that remains

But He will wipe every tear from their eyes
There shall be no more death and no more mourning
There’ll be no more crying no more pain
And all suffering will pass away

Shadows in the dark hiding from the shame
Tears will fall on the hardened hearts
While the hurts and the scars were tearing them apart

But he will wipe away every stain from their eyes
And will bottle up their tears and heal their sorrows
No one will snatch them from His arms
And all suffering
And all suffering will pass away.

When a Child is Lost:
In November 1988, I faced a heartbreak that no parent should ever know. My eldest son, only five months old, passed away. The grief that followed was immediate, overwhelming, and life-altering. Even decades later, the pain remains, returning unexpectedly in a rush of tears or a sudden memory. Time moves forward, yet some losses leave a permanent mark on the heart. Each tear, each memory, is a reminder of the love that remains even when the child is gone.

Tragically, my experience is not unique. Across the world, parents and families experience the devastating loss of a child in ways that are often hidden or silenced.

Suicide claims the lives of many young people, young men and young women alike, leaving behind a grief compounded by guilt, unanswered questions, and feelings of helplessness. Lives can be stolen by mental illness, depression, isolation, addiction, or the weight of societal expectations that crush rather than uplift.

Other children and young people are taken too soon in unexpected accidents or illnesses. Some endure unspeakable abuse or trafficking, their lives marked by trauma that often goes unnoticed until the loss comes.

The grief in these situations is layered—pain compounded by shame, confusion, anger, and a sense of helplessness. Yet our society often responds with silence rather than compassion, leaving grieving families isolated in their suffering.

Where is the hope
In the midst of such sorrow, it is natural to ask: Where is hope? What comfort can be offered?

Scripture speaks into this grief with a clarity that transcends human understanding. In Revelation, we are reminded of God’s promise:
“He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death, no more mourning, no more crying, and no more pain. All suffering will pass away.” (Revelation 21:4)

This is not empty wishful thinking—it is the heart of Christ Himself. When Lazarus died, Jesus wept. He knows our grief intimately. He understands the depth of a parent’s sorrow, the ache of a sibling’s heart, and the unanswered questions that linger for a lifetime.

In every loss, He stands with us, carrying our tears and offering a hope that endures beyond the darkness.

Even when the world seems silent or indifferent, we can cling to the promise that God holds every lost child in His care. One day, every tear will be wiped away, every wound healed, and every sorrow replaced with joy. In the meantime, He walks with us in our grief, giving strength for each day, comfort for each moment, and hope that death does not have the final word.

Prayer
We bring before You all those who have lost a child—through illness, accident, suicide, abuse, trafficking, or any sudden or tragic circumstance. Lord, You see the depths of their grief, the tears that fall in quiet moments, and the heaviness in their hearts. Pour out Your comfort upon them. Remind them that You weep with them, that You hold their children in Your eternal care, and that Your love never fails. Grant them strength for each day, peace that surpasses understanding, and the assurance that one day, all suffering will end, and joy will be made complete. Hold their hearts close, Lord, and bring healing where there is brokenness.

In the Silence of My Life
There are seasons in life that feel uniquely silent— moments when stillness is not just the absence of noise, but the absence of dreams, direction, and clarity. It is a strange quietness, almost holy in its weight. Just as the purple heather on the moors mirrors the ending of summer and the gentle arrival of autumn, so these silent seasons reflect times of rest, surrender, and soul-level reflection.

Yet it is often in these very still moments that God speaks with the greatest clarity. Silence becomes sanctuary. Stillness becomes invitation. These are the moments when we retreat into the voice we know—the steady, unchanging voice of God. His voice remains even when we wander, even when we feel lost, even when hope feels slow to rise. It is the voice that was, and is, and is yet to come—never absent, never failing, merely waiting for us to quiet the noise so we may hear Him again.

In the ruins of past days
Reflection inevitably leads us back—back to places of disappointment, mistakes, and the crumbling ruins of choices we wish we could change. But when we dare to look honestly, we also discover a thread of mercy woven through every season.
“Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life” (Psalm 23:6).

Even in the ruins, God has never let go.
Within the ashes of old hopes lies a flickering ember—small, fragile, but alive. It only takes the breath of God to awaken it into flame.

Just like the ruins of Whitby Abbey, though the footprints have changed upon the changing sands of the 21st century, there is a love that still remains. The prayers of past generations still echo. The work of God still stands and the love of God still endures—untouched by time, untouched by failure, untouched by human frailty.
In the Coastlands of My Life.

In 2001, I left the familiar rhythm of the city of York and stepped into a new call along the Yorkshire coast. It led me from Bridlington to Scarborough and now to Robin Hood’s Bay, (just south of Whitby), The coastlands reflect the prophetic nature of a God that lives with those on the edges, the marginalised, the forgotten, the overlooked, the weary.

Anyone who has lived by or visited the Yorkshire coast will know that when the north-east wind blows—summer or winter—it chills straight through to the bone.
Yet beyond its harshness lies a raw, breathtaking beauty—cliffs carved by centuries, horizons that calm the soul, seas that speak of mystery and wonder.

In the coastlands of these days, often marked by small towns burdened with deprivation and barren dreams, there is still a love that leads us home.

The Holy Spirit moves across these shores—not as a cold arctic wind, but as the restoring wind of God, the One who heals and rebuilds “the places long devastated” (Isaiah 61). It is a love that carries us home.

In the Morning Still to Come
As I reflect on the coastlands, there is a morning still to come—one that will reveal the fullness of the treasures God has prepared for us. These treasures are not earned through our strength or effort, but given freely through the grace of Christ.

There is a depth of love—deeper than the sea—that calls to us. Calls us by name. Calls us into hope. Calls us to trust again.

For at the edges of our lives, where land meets sea, where our troubled souls battle against the raging sea of judgment, there is a love that steadies us. A love that leads us safely home. A love that will not let us go.

Prayer
In the silence of our lives, speak to us. Open our ears to hear Your voice more clearly, and our eyes to see Your hand at work all around us. Reveal more of who You are, and show us the treasure still to come—the grace, love, and hope You have prepared. Help us to recognise Your presence in the quiet, and to follow where Your Spirit leads.

Perhaps the most painful experience any of us will ever endure is the loss of a loved one. Though death is the one certainty of life, it remains the subject few want to speak about.

Often silence is why loss often catches us unprepared. Leaving us devastated—paralysed by grief, unable to imagine how life can continue. It can leave a wound so deep that some never fully recover, a confusion and sorrow that shakes the very core of who we are.

The pain of losing someone you have lived beside for decades leaves a loneliness that feels impossible to fill. The sorrow of losing a parent or grandparent can leave you feeling abandoned, like an orphan whose comfort has been stripped away.

When relationships break, we break with them. We were created for relationship, and when that relationship is severed, the fracture runs through our own hearts.

What if death was not the end?

What if—borrowing the words of Nanci Griffith— there is a light beyond these woods?

What if there is a place where we will see our loved ones again?

What if —borrowing the words of Gandolf—End? No, the journey doesn’t end here. Death is just another path, one that we all must take. The grey rain-curtain of this world rolls back, and all turns to silver glass, and then you see it.

What if there is a heaven?
There are moments when our hearts instinctively reach upward—toward something better, something whole, something beyond the weight of this world. Scripture tells us this longing is no accident; God has
“set eternity in the human heart” (Ecclesiastes 3:11).

Deep within us lies a quiet ache for home—a yearning for the place where every fracture is healed and every shadow gives way to light.

Heaven is not wishful thinking; it is the promised destination for all who trust in Jesus. Every sunrise, every act of kindness, every whisper of peace is a reminder that the story God is writing is leading somewhere beautiful.

Jesus spoke plainly about this hope:
“In my Father’s house are many rooms… I go to prepare a place for you” (John 14:2–3).

Heaven is not vague or distant. It is personal. The One who knows us perfectly is the One who prepares our eternal home.

Revelation gives us a glimpse of what awaits—a renewed heaven and earth, the dwelling place of God with His people. In God’s presence, every sorrow is redeemed, every loss restored. No more grief. No more fear. No more long nights or heavy burdens.

Heaven is also a place of perfect belonging. In Revelation 7:9 John describes
“a great multitude… from every nation, tribe, people and language” gathered before God”

No division. No distance. A family made whole in the presence of Jesus. When loneliness stings or separation overwhelms, heaven whispers: This is not the end of the story.
“Though for now we have to say goodbye, it is only for a time.
So may His peace rest upon you, until we meet again”.

Even in the final moments of Jesus’ own suffering, when His body was torn and His blood poured out, we see a picture of heaven’s mercy. Two criminals hung beside Him—one hurled insults in hopelessness, saying,
“Aren’t you the Messiah? Save yourself and us!”
(Luke 23:39).

But the other saw something different. With honesty and humility, he said,
“We are punished justly… but this man has done nothing wrong.”

Then he turned his heart toward Jesus and said:
“Lord, remember me when You come into Your kingdom.”

Jesus replied, with no conditions, no demands, no delay:
“Truly I tell you, today you will be with Me in paradise.” (Luke 23:40–43)

Jesus did not give him a list of requirements. He simply offered mercy—and a promise of heaven. That same hope is offered to us.

One day we will see our loved ones again. And perhaps, in the mystery of eternity, we may even meet that man who hung beside Jesus—the first to receive the promise of paradise.

The Lord draws near to the broken-hearted and comforts those who mourn (Psalm 34:18). Even in sorrow, His presence brings peace, reminding us that grief is not the final word, and that one day we will be made whole.

Prayer
In the midst of our grief and the shadows of loss, we come to You, knowing You are our refuge and strength. You see our hearts, the cracks and the pain, and You hold each tear in Your hand. Lord, we thank You for the hope of heaven—for the promise that our separation is only temporary, and that one day we will dwell with You and our loved ones in Your presence.

Epilogue: The Unfolding Revelation

The revelation started simple: a walk with Carlos, a sprinkle of rain, and a realisation that Christ’s love is not a gentle mist, but a downpour filling every fracture. Each chapter built upon this foundation, moving through the essential elements of a life anchored in grace:

Colour & Creativity: We found Him as the Artist of the universe, not only painting the landscapes we see but also shaping the canvas of our own lives with purpose and vibrancy.
Peace & Trust: We encountered Jehovah Shalom, the Lord of Peace, inviting us onto the ballroom of grace. Peace is not the absence of the storm (the pounding waves and brewing anxiety) but the unshakable trust in the One who leads the dance at its very centre.
Season & Endurance: We learned that God’s covenant ensures the rhythm of winter and spring remains, reminding us that no season—whether of joyful harvest or silent endurance—is without His presence. He is in the slow thaw as much as the summer sun.
Hope & Dawn: We fixed our eyes on the Bright Morning Star (Revelation 22:16), the herald of a brand-new day that promises the end of the long night of waiting and sorrow.
Anchor & Calm: We acknowledged the quiet, persistent thief of anxiety, yet found the ultimate answer in Hope ringing a bell, bottling our tears, and resting on the truth that while our minds may tremble, our soul can be stilled.

The Invitation to the Shore
And so, we return to the coast. The final image is of the Ancient Rock remaining firm against the furious ocean, and the promise of a Morning that is always coming. This is the heart of the journey: the understanding that our Rescue comes from heaven, Carrying us home.

You are not carried home when the storm is over, but through the storm. The love song plays not just in the calm, but as the wind roars.

The book you hold is simply a testimony to the footsteps of creation and the beauty of God’s love seen on a short walk. May these words, these songs, and these prayers be an invitation for you to step outside your own door, look up at the sky, and listen for the whispers of hope and the bold colours of a love that is wild, unexpected, and glorious.

The night is not forever. The Rock remains. The dance continues.

Walk on.

In 2022, these words came to mind:

Tears are falling,

Change is calling out into this world.
The silent pleas of those in grief,
Of those in need with nowhere to turn—
There is Hope.

Those words marked the beginning of a journey—a journey of listening, of writing, and of seeking. Over the next three years, I felt called to write songs that speak into the darkness, carry a message of hope, and remind us of the quiet, unshakable presence of God in uncertain times.

This book is an invitation to walk that journey with me. Each chapter opens a window into the heart of the lyrics, delving deeper into the hope that lies before us, revealing the story, the inspiration, and heartbeat behind every song. It is my hope that, in these pages, you will find a light to guide your own path, a comfort for your own sorrows, and a whisper of hope for the days ahead.
